Description
No. 21 St Peter's Gate is a shop and office building constructed in 1895 by Heazell & Son of Nottingham for J Hind, with an extension added in 1896 for C Tyler. The building has been altered in the late 20th century. It is designed in the Italianate style, featuring red brick with ashlar dressings. The architectural details include angle pilasters, cornices at the ground floor, second floor, and eaves, as well as a balustrade with pedestals.
The windows are primarily original plain sashes with stone surrounds, and those on the first and second floors have segmental heads and keystones. The building stands three storeys high plus attics, with a two-by-two window arrangement. It occupies a corner site and has a polygonal corner tower. The ground floor features a corner doorway flanked by panelled pilasters and single plate glass windows. The right return showcases a replica late 19th-century wooden shopfront with a central door and overlight, flanked by single plate glass windows with fanlights, and rusticated ashlar pilasters on each side.
The corner tower contains three sashes on each floor, with flat-headed windows in the attics. The facade facing St Peter's Gate has two windows on each floor, with the attic windows flanked by pilasters. The right return has single windows on each floor to the left, and to the right, there is a canted bay window with a cornice, which is two storeys high and has three sashes, with paired segment-arched windows above.
