Description
King John's Chambers is a building located on Bridle Smith Gate in Nottingham, constructed in 1888 by John Howitt of Nottingham. It serves as shops, offices, and an arcade and was restored in the late 20th century. The structure is made of red brick with ashlar dressings and features timber framing with rendered nogging. It has plain tile roofs and four tall, coped side wall stacks, showcasing a Tudor Revival style.
The building has three storeys plus attics and a symmetrical front with a central opening leading to the arcade, flanked by single late 20th-century shopfronts. The ground floor is divided by original panelled ashlar pilasters beneath a fascia with end brackets. The upper floors are jettied, featuring projecting end bays supported by ashlar brackets. Each floor has a central three-light casement window, and the attic includes a hipped dormer with three lights. The side bays are adorned with four-light windows on each floor and a gabled dormer with bargeboards and a finial in the attic. There is also a three-light mullioned window with glazing bars above a smaller three-light window.
The arcade is constructed of painted and glazed brick and consists of two sections with seven and eight windows, divided by a footbridge at the second floor level. The fenestration is regular, with plain sashes, and the ground floor windows are larger. The arcade features a plastic glazed roof from the late 20th century.
