Description

The building at 4 Bridlesmith Gate and 13 Poultry is a shops and offices building dating to circa 1870, with later alterations in the late 20th century. It is constructed of red brick with ashlar dressings and has a hipped slate roof. The architectural style is Renaissance Revival.

The front facade to Bridlesmith Gate features quoins, sill bands, string courses, an eaves cornice resting on brackets, a blocking course, and original plain sash windows. To the left is a late 19th-century wooden shopfront with a recessed door and a two-light shop window, flanked by granite pilasters carrying a fascia board, with a 20th-century door leading to a side entry to the left of the shopfront. To the right is a late 20th-century shopfront with plate glass windows and a corner doorway, set below a 19th-century cornice. Above the shopfronts are five sashes with moulded surrounds and pediments. Above that are five segment-arched sashes with keystones, hood moulds, and an impost band. The upper level has segment-arched sashes with keystones and a flush impost band. The right return front, to Poultry, has the ground floor supported on mosaic-clad columns; the upper floors have similar fenestration to the main front.

In 1924, a British Broadcasting Company (BBC) regional radio studio was established at 4 Bridlesmith Gate as part of the BBC's growing national broadcasting network. The BBC, founded in 1922, has evolved into a globally recognized public service broadcaster and played an increasingly important role in British life and culture throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. By 1939, BBC programming was heard in approximately 75% of British households. The BBC began broadcasting the world’s first regularly-scheduled high-definition television service in 1936.
