Description

Nos. 1 and 3 Bridle Smith Gate are shops and offices built between 1873 and 1875 by Lawrence Bright of Nottingham for TG & L Brewitt, with an additional shop added in 1927 by AN Bromley of Nottingham for Smart & Brown. The building is constructed of red brick with ashlar dressings and features hipped slate roofs. The original 1875 section has bays separated by pilasters, moulded bands on each floor, and a heavy modillion cornice. The windows are primarily stone mullioned cross casements. The structure stands three storeys tall, plus attics, and has a three-by-two window arrangement.

Situated on a corner site, it has a rounded corner entrance bay. The 1927 addition forms the end bay on the right side and lacks a cornice. The ground floor features a continuous shopfront, which was reglazed in the late 20th century, extending around both returns. The entrance bay includes a moulded round-arched ashlar doorway with granite shafts, along with a renewed door and fanlight. To the left are two shop windows followed by another round-arched doorway. The right return has two shop windows, with the right one flanked by panelled pilasters. All windows have wooden mullions and elliptical overlights.

On the first floor, the corner bay has a two-light cross casement, with a similar window above it. The attics feature a single transomed window. The left return has a three-light window on each floor, with a transomed window to the left. The attics have a single light window flanked by two-light windows, all adorned with shaped hood moulds. The right return has similar window arrangements. The 1927 end bay includes four-light windows, and the attics have a three-light window.
