Description

54 and 56 Bridle Smith Gate are two houses that have been converted into a shop. They date from the early 16th and 17th centuries but were refronted in the early 19th century and altered in the late 20th century. The buildings are covered in painted brick cladding that hides significant remains of timber framing. They have a slate roof and rise three storeys with two windows across the front. The ground floor features a late 20th-century shopfront with a central doorway flanked by rusticated ashlar pilasters. The upper floors contain two glazing bar sash windows with wedge lintels and double keystones, with the upper windows being smaller.

Inside, on the ground floor to the left, there is a moulded span beam with stops and exposed joists. The right bay includes a plain span beam with mortices, a stud wall made from reused timber, and a 17th-century framed wall panel. In the center of the first floor, there are two bay posts with empty mortices, along with a beam and a stud wall. The stud side wall to the left has rendered nogging.
