Description
Number 58 on Bridlesmith Gate is a shop building dating from 1859, with a northern facsimile bay added in 1909. It is constructed of red brick, featuring a stucco ground floor and dressings, topped with a slate roof that has two brick ridge stacks. The ground floor is channelled and has a dentillated cornice, while the first floor includes a sill band, an elaborate modillion main cornice, and a coped blocking course. The building stands three storeys high and has a three-by-three window arrangement. The windows are primarily plain sashes, with first-floor windows featuring segmental pediments on elaborate scroll brackets, and those on the upper floors having cornices and bracketed sills.
The building occupies a corner site with a recessed rounded corner. The corner entrance bay has a chamfered round-arched doorway with a fanlight, and above it, there is a single window on each floor. The right side facing Bridlesmith Gate has three large shop windows divided by pilasters, with a single window above on each floor, followed by two tripartite windows. The left side facing Low Pavement features a round-arched doorway with a keystone on the left and two small single-pane windows on the right. Above this, there are three windows on each floor. Inside, the ground floor has moulded cornices and a moulded cross beam ceiling supported by round cast-iron columns.
