Bank. 1836. By Thomas Hawksley of Nottingham for the Nottingham Savings Bank. Altered c1900, restored late C20. Stucco, with ashlar doorcase. Roof not visible behind blocking course. Classical Revival style. Plinth, giant Doric pilasters, frieze with wreaths, plain cornice. 2 storeys; 5 window range of plain sashes. Central Baroque Revival doorcase, rusticated and with a modillion pediment. Round-arched doorway and fanlight flanked by Ionic columns, with elongated keystone. Either side 2 tall windows with moulded surrounds. To right, side entrance with doorway flanked by pilasters. Above 5 plain sashes with moulded surrounds. INTERIOR has a heavily enriched cross beam ceiling with modillions, carried on 4 Roman Ionic columns. Bank fittings renewed late C20. Hawksley designed several buildings in Nottingham and later became famous as a waterworks engineer. (The Buildings of England: Pevsner N: Nottinghamshire: London: 1979-: 230; ).
