Description

No. 11 Low Pavement is a bank built in 1836 by Thomas Hawksley for the Nottingham Savings Bank. It was altered around 1900 and restored in the late 20th century. The building is constructed of stucco with an ashlar doorcase and is designed in the Classical Revival style. It features a plinth, giant Doric pilasters, a frieze adorned with wreaths, and a plain cornice. The structure has two storeys and a five-window range of plain sash windows. The central doorcase, designed in the Baroque Revival style, is rusticated and topped with a modillion pediment. The round-arched doorway has a fanlight and is flanked by Ionic columns with an elongated keystone. On either side of the doorway are two tall windows with moulded surrounds. To the right, there is a side entrance with a doorway flanked by pilasters. Above, there are five plain sash windows with moulded surrounds. Inside, the bank features a heavily enriched cross beam ceiling with modillions, supported by four Roman Ionic columns. The bank fittings were renewed in the late 20th century. Hawksley was known for designing several buildings in Nottingham and later gained fame as a waterworks engineer.
