Description

Enfield House is a mid-18th century town house, now used as offices, with an attached area wall. There is a late 18th century rear wing, and the building was converted in the late 20th century. It is constructed of red brick with painted ashlar dressings and features a slate roof with coped gables and two gable stacks. The building has an elaborate modillion eaves cornice and stands three storeys tall with a two-window range. Each floor contains two Venetian windows, with the ground floor windows featuring a central light that breaks through a pediment. All windows have a central round-arched 12-pane sash and glazing bar sidelights. To the right, there are steps leading up to a doorcase adorned with a dentillated pediment supported by Ionic columns. The round-arched opening includes a double keystone, a fanlight, and a renewed six-panel door. The exterior is complemented by a coped area wall with channelled rustication.

Inside, the interior is largely original and features a wooden dogleg stair with triple turned and twisted balusters, a ramped and scrolled handrail, and fielded panelled wainscot. The ground floor front rooms are linked by an elliptical arch and have a modillion cornice. The rear room includes a moulded elliptical arched fireplace, while other rooms feature cornices and blind arches. Several fielded six-panel doors with various architraves are present. The roof structure has been largely renewed and includes a pair of cruck trusses. The rock-cut cellars, arranged on two levels and linked by a stone winder stair, have elliptical brick vaults, wine bins, and thrawls.
