Description
Willoughby House is a town house, now used as offices, built around 1738. It was altered in the late 18th century and restored and converted in the late 20th century. The house was originally constructed for Rothwell Willoughby and features red brick with ashlar dressings. The roof is not visible behind a coped parapet. The building has a plinth, chamfered quoins, and a moulded eaves cornice. It is three storeys high and has a five-window range. The windows are 12-pane sashes with bolection moulded surrounds and keystones.
The central doorcase is adorned with Roman Ionic columns, a broken segmental pediment, and a moulded keystone, leading to four-panel double doors with an overlight. The garden front has similar regular fenestration with brick flat arches and keystones. A central doorway has been converted to a window and features a frostwork surround with a mask keystone.
Inside, the house retains original features, including a wooden dogleg stair with turned and twisted balusters and a ramped scrolled handrail, along with a similar but plainer stair on the upper floors. The first-floor room is half-panelled and has a corniced doorcase, while other rooms contain mainly original joinery. The principal rafter roof is intact, and the original rock-cut cellars include three circular rooms with central columns and integral tables. The largest cellar has a rock thrawl, while the others contain wine bins. Access passages feature rendered brick vaults.
