Description

The Town Mission Ragged School, built in 1858 with late 19th-century additions, is a charity school located on Brook Street in Nottingham. The building features coursed rubble and rock-faced stone, accented with red, white, and blue brick dressings and a tile roof with a diaper pattern. It has a plinth and coped gables, with windows that are mainly round-arched, incorporating wooden mullions and transoms, and topped with polychrome brick heads.

The school consists of a single-storey main range with four bays, which is arranged in an H-plan with rear wings and additions. The main range has four large gabled dormers, each containing round-arched windows. Between the outer windows, there are shouldered external brick stacks, and above, four gablet ventilators. Each gable features a large window, and at each end, there are small projections with single bays and boarded windows. The left addition is roofless, while the right side has a larger projecting addition with a flat-headed window. The right return includes two gables towards the rear, each with a round-arched window and a shouldered stack between them, which is corbelled out. The right gable has a ribbon inscribed "Town Mission Ragged School 1858." The left return features a small gabled projection with two windows.

Surrounding the front of the classroom range is an attached boundary and retaining wall made of coursed rubble, topped with a spiked railing. At the right corner, there are square ashlar gate piers with pyramidal caps and renewed wooden gates. A short length of wall and railing extends to the right return. The building was vacant at the time of the survey.
