Description

21 and 23 Goose Gate is a town house that has been converted into two shops. It was built around 1700 and altered around 1890. The building is made of painted brick with ashlar dressings and has both slate and plain tile roofs. It features an irregular street front with three storeys plus attics.

The right side has a late 19th-century shopfront with a recessed door, while the left side includes a passage entrance with a plank door. Above the passage, there is a gabled wing with tripartite plate glass windows on the first and second floors. To the right, set back, is the main town house front, which has three bays with three plain sash windows on each floor, all featuring keystones. Above these windows is a moulded brick parapet.

The rear elevation, which faces a yard, has a late 19th-century inserted shopfront on the ground floor. Above this, there are two glazing bar sashes on each floor, topped by a small hipped dormer. Set back to the right is a single bay with a glazing bar sash on each floor.

Inside, there is an early 18th-century staircase with a single flight and return, featuring a moulded and ramped handrail with two balusters per tread, one of which is twisted. The upper flight leading to the attic has single turned balusters. The first-floor front room of No. 23 has early 18th-century moulded coving and a late 19th-century marble fireplace. The second floor contains a complete early 18th-century panelled room with raised and fielded panels, a dado rail, and overmantel panels, although the fireplace is boarded.
