Description
The Bendigo Monument is a funeral monument located in St Mary's Rest Garden, dating from 1880. It commemorates William Abednigo Thompson, who was born around 1816 and died in 1880. The monument is made of white marble and features a prostrate figure of a lion on a rock-faced base, which holds an inscribed scroll in one paw. The rectangular pedestal includes an inscription and a moulded plinth. William Thompson, known as Bendigo, was a local professional boxer who gained celebrity status and later became a preacher.
