Description
26, 28, and 30 Broad Street are three houses that originally included weavers' workshops above, now converted into shops and flats. They date from the late 17th century and late 18th century, with some alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. The buildings are constructed of red brick and feature a partly renewed plain tile roof with an off-centre brick ridge stack. No.30, located on the left, has a rebuilt left gable and a painted front.
The structures rise three storeys plus attics and have a six-window range. On the first floor, there are three pairs of 12-pane sash windows. In the centre, there are two weavers' windows with seven and five lights, while to the right are two similar windows with four lights in altered openings. To the left, there are two slightly larger early 19th-century windows with three lights. The attics feature two gabled dormers with renewed casements on the right.
The ground floor includes an early 19th-century wooden shopfront in the centre, which has a single window and a half-glazed door, flanked on the right by a boarded window and on the left by a segment-arched entry. To the right, there is an altered late 19th-century wooden shopfront with a boarded window and a recessed door, alongside a four-panel door with an overlight. To the left, there is a late 18th-century round-headed doorcase made of wood and stucco, which has a renewed door and fanlight. Adjacent to this are a shop window and a single shop window with a door.
Inside, No.26 retains a largely late 18th-century interior featuring a fireplace, cupboard, and doors, as well as exposed 17th-century chamfered beams in the weavers' loft. No.30 has a similar beam on the ground floor.
