Description
These are a group of back-to-back cottages with knitters' workshops, dating from circa 1845 and altered in the mid-19th century. The buildings are constructed of red brick with slate roofs, featuring two gable stacks and two ridge stacks. They comprise two storeys plus attics, originally with a three-window range. The front elevation originally had three plain sash windows and three doors with overlights, all set within brick segmental arches. Two original beaded panelled doors survive. Above the ground-floor openings are three smaller plain sash windows with similar arched heads. The attics contain six two-light glazing bar casements. The rear elevation is similar, though some windows have been altered or boarded up. The interior retains two fitted cupboards flanking a renewed fireplace. These cottages represent a rare survival in the city centre, as back-to-back houses were still being constructed in the outskirts as late as 1852, and knitters' workshops were built in Calverton in 1857.
