Description

This is an early 19th-century house with a workshop, now used as a shop. It is located on Broad Street, Nottingham. The building's exterior is brick, painted and partly rendered, with painted ashlar dressings and a slate roof topped with a gable stack. It is three storeys high and has a two-window front. The ground floor features a wooden shopfront with side pilasters and a cornice supported by brackets. The shop window has three lights with a cross-mullion design, and is flanked to the left by a half-glazed door and overlight. A board door gives access to a side entry. The first floor has two 12-pane sash windows, and the second floor has two 9-pane sash windows, each with a painted wedge lintel and keystone. Large glazing bar casements are found at the rear on the first floor. The ground floor shop interior retains early 20th-century fittings related to shoe repairing. This building is notable as one of the few surviving examples of houses with attached domestic workshops in Nottingham, many of which were built between approximately 1780 and 1840 to serve knitters and lacemakers.
