Description

A terrace of fifteen houses and a shop, dating from around 1860 and restored in the 1980s. The buildings are constructed of red brick with brick detailing and have slate roofs topped with renewed brick stacks. The windows are sash windows with glazing bars, set within brick round heads and flat arches. The eaves are cogged. The houses are three storeys high and each has a single window with a side entrance door. There are fifteen windows and fourteen doors in total. Number 38, at the eastern end, features a 19th-century shop front with a corner entrance door flanked by shop windows with glazing bars, all beneath a wooden cornice. Campbell Grove was part of a planned development that also included The Promenade and Robin Hood Terrace; it was built after the Enclosure Act of 1845. The layout, known as a ‘grove’ locally, was designed to save space by omitting a road.
