Description

A terrace of 30 houses built around 1860, with alterations in the late 19th century and restoration around 1980. The houses are constructed of painted brick with slate roofs and renewed brick chimney stacks, featuring ashlar and stucco dressings. They have renewed glazing bar sash windows, and the terrace is stepped uphill from east to west. Most of the houses are arranged with three bays, featuring blank central windows. The doorcases alternate between round-headed designs and those with cornices supported by brackets. Numbers 15 and 17 have doorcases with cornices in a different style. The west end boasts a canted bay window on the house at number 30. At the east end, a larger corner block, altered in the late 19th century, includes a symmetrical arrangement of three windows, flanked by canted bay windows, and extends over two storeys. The Promenade is part of a planned development that also includes Campbell Grove and Robin Hood Terrace, initiated following the Enclosure Act of 1845.
