Description
23 and 23A Barker Gate is a pair of houses with attic workshops, dating from around 1830, which are currently vacant. The buildings were damaged by fire in the late 20th century. They are constructed of red brick with stucco dressings and feature a slate roof, which includes clerestory windows and two gable stacks. The windows, which were boarded at the time of the survey, have wedge lintels with double keystones on the lower floors, and brick flat arches above. The structure has three storeys plus attics and a four-window range. In the centre, there is a passage entrance with an elliptical brick arch. To the left of the entrance is a door with a wedge lintel and keystone, followed by a window, while to the right are two windows. Above this, there are four windows on each floor, and the clerestory has continuous glazing. This building represents a transitional stage in the lace industry, bridging domestic and purpose-built industrial buildings.
