Description
A lace warehouse, dating to 1897, situated on Barker Gate in Nottingham. Designed by Watson Fothergill for Cuckfield, Haseldine and Manderfield, it is constructed of red brick with ashlar and blue brick dressings, topped with gabled and hipped plain tile roofs. The building is in the Domestic Revival style and incorporates the nearby No.29 Stoney Street.
The warehouse has a plinth, rusticated ground floor, a cornice, sill bands, string courses, and a pentice roof to the third floor. It is a corner block, with four storeys plus a basement and attics, presenting ten windows by three. The corner entrance bay is distinguished by an ashlar doorcase flanked by shafts and single windows. Above the entrance is a two-storey oriel window with three lights and a hipped roof. The third floor features four windows recessed between octagonal domed turrets that rise through the pentice roof, flanked by a taller octagonal hipped turret above. The return elevation has regular window placement and features plain sash windows on the ground floor, and segment-headed windows above. Three doors are visible on the ground floor to the right, the third within a distinct entrance bay with a round-arched opening and voussoirs. The attics contain mainly smaller, flat-headed triple windows.
Inside, a stone winder staircase rises from the ground floor, transitioning to a spiral staircase above. The staircase has wrought-iron twist balusters and a ramped wooden handrail. The building demonstrates Group Value as a well-preserved example of late Victorian warehouse architecture.
