Description
21 to 27 Stoney Street is a group of lace warehouses that have been converted into studios and offices. They were built in the late 19th century, with additions made in 1910 by W.D. Pratt of Nottingham for A. Schmidt. The buildings are constructed of red brick with an ashlar ground floor and ashlar dressings. The roof is not visible.
The structure features a plinth, a ground floor sill band, and cornices at both the main and eaves levels, topped with a coped parapet. Most of the windows are original plain sashes with brick flat arches. The ground floor openings have round arches with voussoirs. The buildings rise four storeys plus a basement and attics, with a symmetrical front that has a projecting centre.
The ground floor includes an elliptical arched coved entrance with voussoirs and segment-arched panelled double doors, flanked by single windows. Beyond this entrance are reglazed windows, and in the first and twelfth bays, there are panelled doors, all featuring fanlights. Above the entrance, there is a large glazing bar double sash window, supported by a column, pilasters, and an entablature, flanked by plain sashes. The next level has a similar glazing bar double sash with a cornice and elongated keystone, flanked by single sashes. The uppermost level has similar windows without ornamentation, all featuring projecting architraves. The attics have four plain windows.
The side ranges have regular fenestration, with six windows on each floor. Inside, there is a stone cantilever open well staircase with four flights, featuring a wrought-iron balustrade and a glazed tile dado in the Art Nouveau style. There are also two Classical wooden doorcases.
