Description
No. 47 Stoney Street is a factory building, now used as offices, dating from the mid-19th century and altered in 1902 by G.S. Doughty of Nottingham for Mills & Gibbs. The building is constructed of red brick with ashlar dressings and features a chamfered plinth, quoins at the corner bay, a first-floor cornice, an eaves cornice, and a blocking course. The windows are plain sashes with segmental heads and linked hood moulds. The structure is five storeys tall, plus a basement, and has a three-by-eight window arrangement. It occupies a corner site with a rebated rounded corner. The corner bay includes a moulded ashlar doorcase that has been altered to form a window, topped with a segmental pediment and dated 1902, featuring the monogram PLM (Philo L Mills). On the Stoney Street front, to the left, there is a five-panel door with a fanlight, and to its right, two windows. Above these, there are three windows on each floor. The right return, facing Plumptre Street, has a window that has been altered to serve as a loading door, followed by a moulded four-panel double door with a fanlight. Below, there are five basement openings, and above, eight windows on each floor. The interior includes a stone winder stair and landing with a cast-iron balustrade and a ramped wooden handrail. It also features four Classical style wooden doorcases with half-glazed panelled doors and round cast-iron columns supporting moulded beams.
