Description
The churchyard walls, railings, and gates at the Church of St Mary date from the mid-18th century, likely built on earlier foundations. The brick walls feature an ashlar plinth and coping, and are topped with spiked wrought-iron railings supported by cast-iron posts. These railings enclose a rectangular churchyard measuring approximately 100 meters by 50 meters.
On the south side, facing High Pavement, there is a retaining wall about 3 meters high, also built on an ashlar plinth. Near the center of this wall is an elliptical arched doorway that contains a recessed six-panel door. The east side, which faces Stoney Street, has a similar retaining wall and features a flight of stone steps at the south corner leading to a single gate with cast-iron posts and a wrought-iron lampholder. The north side, facing Kayes Walk, has a single gate at each end, while the west side, which faces St Mary's Walk, has a wall approximately 1 meter high. A war memorial and gateway located at the south-west corner are listed separately.
