SK5739NE SHORT HILL 646-1/21/555 (North side) Retaining wall, steps and railings bordering Hollow Stone

GV II

Retaining wall steps and railings. c1740, altered C19 and C20. Brick, rendered, with ashlar coping and steps and wrought-iron railing. The wall, approx 60m long, varies in height with the slope of the ground, maximum approx 3m. Near the centre, 2 large segment-arched entrances, C19, with panelled doors. To west, an altered garage opening with lintel, then 2 segment-arched doorways. The wall is topped with a spiked wrought-iron railing. At the west end, 3 sections of scrolled railing, resited. At the east end, a flight of steps with winders, with the same wrought-iron balustrade and railing. This building was probably constructed in 1740 when Hollow Stone was widened.
