Description

A warehouse, now offices, was built in 1883 by RC Sutton of Nottingham for Mills & Gibbs. It was altered in the early 20th century. The building is constructed of red brick with painted ashlar dressings, and has a roof that is not visible. It has two coped and dentillated side wall stacks. Designed in the Italianate style, it features a chamfered plinth, quoins, a first-floor cornice, eaves cornice, and blocking course. The windows are largely original segment-arched sashes with linked hood moulds. The building is five stories high, plus a basement and attics, and has nine windows by five. It occupies a corner site with a rounded and rebated corner. The corner entrance bay has a moulded ashlar doorcase with a segmental pediment on brackets, and a curved four-panel double door with overlight. Above the entrance are windows on each floor. The attic has two dentillated coped pedestals and clerestory windows. The front facing Stoney Street has eight windows. To the right is a pedimented doorcase with a four-panel door above which are nine windows on each floor. The basement has eight segment-arched openings, some of which are glazed. The left return, facing Plumptre Street, has five windows on each floor. The attic has an early 20th-century wavy-topped dormer with a round window. The basement has two openings. The rear elevation is mainly white glazed brick. The interior includes a stone stair with a cast-iron balustrade, the staircase having winders above the ground floor.
