Description

42 High Pavement, which also includes No. 2 Commerce Square, is a warehouse that has been converted into offices. It dates from the early to mid-19th century and was restored and converted in the late 20th century. The building is constructed of red brick, partly rendered, with ashlar dressings and slate roofs featuring coped gables and two side wall stacks. It has a plinth and a renewed wooden eaves cornice with corner breaks. The structure is four storeys high with a square plan and a five-window range. The windows are mostly original glazing bar sashes with brick flat arches.

The main front features a recessed block on the right with four windows and a rendered front with regular fenestration. In the second bay, there is a six-panel door with an overlight. To the left, a projecting bay has a first-floor sill band, single windows on each floor, and a rounded blind corner. The left return has six windows with regular fenestration and a beaded six-panel door with voussoirs. The rear has two sections, with three margin light sashes on the left and two glazing bar sashes on the right. There are late 20th-century garage doors with a cornice, flanked by two margin light sashes to the left and a glazing bar sash to the right.

Inside, the building has been extensively remodelled but retains an original winder stair with stick balusters and a ramped scrolled handrail.
