Description

Fosse House is a former warehouse and adjoining cottages, now used as offices. It was built between 1842 and 1851 and underwent conversion in 1989-1990, with some additions and alterations. The building is constructed of red brick with gault brick dressings and features gabled slate roofs.

The former warehouse, located on the left, is three storeys high and has a five-window range. It has renewed segment arched windows, predominantly featuring top hung casements on the ground floor and three-light sliding sashes above, all with glazing bars. The upper floors are divided into segment arched recessed bays by gault brick pilasters on a rebated band. There is a central single pane window with a wooden lintel, and above it, a similar segment arched window, both of which replaced loft doors. On either side of these, there are two sashes, with the second-floor sashes being smaller. The ground floor has a pair of segment arched doors flanked by two casements. The left gable features a segment arched glazed opening on each floor, with the ground floor opening being partly panelled.

The former cottages, located on the right, are two storeys high and have a two-window range of renewed plain sashes, with the ground floor windows featuring gault brick flat arches. Beyond this, there are gault brick doorcases with renewed blue brick plinths and dentilled cornices, along with renewed doors. Each block has a central gabled stair turret at the rear, flanked by lean-to projections, all dating from around 1990.

Inside, the former warehouse retains its original floors and has a renewed roof structure, while the former cottages preserve part of the original roof structure. Internal divisions have been removed.
