Description

The Racecourse Grandstand is a grandstand and community centre located on Saxilby Road in Lincoln. It was built in 1897, designed by W Mortimer & Son, and constructed by W Wright. The building features gault brick with red brick dressings, stone and cast-iron piers, and has hipped and gabled corrugated iron roofs with decorative valances. It is two storeys high and consists of 12 bays.

The open front includes wood and concrete terraces with coped brick end walls. The iron piers are adorned with scroll brackets. To the right of the main structure, there is a half-round gable displaying the Royal arms, flanked by two triangular gables, all featuring bargeboards. The rear of the building has an off-centre gabled wing with bargeboards and a side wall stack. There is also a single-storey projection with a wavy coped parapet and a gable above a central window. To the left, a hipped wing rises to two storeys. Between the wings, there are three round-headed openings with keystones, which have been fitted with 20th-century glazed screens and doors.

The Racecourse Grandstand is still used occasionally for its original purpose as a grandstand.
