Description
The Museum of Lincolnshire Life is a building originally constructed as militia barracks, armoury, and store in 1857 by Henry Goddard, the County Surveyor. It has since been converted into a museum, with the southwest range remodeled in the late 20th century. The structure is built of brick with stone dressings and features hipped slate roofs in a castellated style.
The building has a single-depth, two-section plan that includes a through archway leading to a rectangular courtyard. The east front consists of five bays, highlighted by a projecting machicolated center with a segmental pointed archway and rusticated guard stones. This is flanked by lower walls, each featuring four crossed rifle slits. Square corner towers with stepped crenellations are present at both ends, and the rear elevation mirrors this design. Surrounding the courtyard are single-storey buildings with corbelled eaves and similar crenellated corner towers, while the north and south sides have a central plain opening.
Although the interior was not inspected, it is reported to have a fireproof construction made of jack arches and cast-iron posts. The building was constructed following the 1852 Militia Reform Act to serve as a secure store for the North Lincolnshire Militia, intended to provide a defensible base and recruitment center to meet the county's militia quota, all designed in a consciously historical style.
