Description
The water tower, dated 1911, was designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield. It features tooled ashlar facing on a brick core and is topped with a pyramidal slate roof, showcasing Baroque Revival detailing. The structure has a battered plinth, clasping pilasters, and a plain parapet supported by corbels. It is built on a square plan with a projecting center on each side, each having rebated corners and five small windows.
The south front is notable for its massive door surround, which includes channelled rustication and a cove-moulded round-headed doorway with a keystone, double doors, and a fanlight. Above the doorway is an inscribed datestone. The second stage of the tower features a central bracketed canopy on each side, displaying the City arms in a cartouche on the south side, with round windows on the other sides. Flanking panels are adorned with fleurs-de-lys in relief.
Inside, the iron water tank is supported by a brick cylinder. The elaborate ashlar facing was added to help the tower blend in with the nearby historic buildings.
