Description
No. 34 Bailgate is a house that has been converted into an old people's home. It dates from the mid-18th century and includes a 14th-century open hall in the rear wing, along with mid-19th century additions. The building is constructed of brick and coursed rubble, featuring stone dressings, and has roofs made of pantiles and concrete tiles with three gable stacks. It has a plinth and coped gables, and is three storeys high with three bays, arranged in an L-plan.
The central entrance features a pedimented Doric doorcase with a lozenge fanlight and a fielded six-panel door. On either side of the entrance are plain sash windows. Above the door, there is a central sash window with glazing bars, flanked by single plain sashes, all adorned with unusual painted multiple keystones.
Inside, the rear wing contains a cruck-framed hall with a chamfered arch brace and a crownpost roof. There is a 19th-century dogleg staircase with winders, stick balusters, and a ramped scrolled handrail. The interior also includes three fielded six-panel doors.
