Description

23 Newport is a house that has been converted into offices. It dates from the late 18th century, with early and mid-19th century features, and has mid-20th century additions. The building is constructed of brick and stucco, topped with hipped and gabled roofs made of slate and pantiles, and has five rendered side wall stacks.

The main block is three storeys high with a double depth plan and an eaves cornice. To the left is a hipped wing that is two storeys tall, and to the right is a set-back wing, also two storeys, featuring an eaves cornice and a coped parapet. The main block has two bay windows, each two storeys high, with hipped roofs and three plain sash windows on each floor. Above these, there is a central glazing bar sash, and above that, three smaller sashes, all with moulded surrounds.

The right wing has a half-glazed door from the mid-19th century in the return angle, which includes an overlight and sidelights, sheltered by a canopy supported by a square pier. To the right of this door is a glazing bar sash with a moulded surround and cornice, and above it are two plain sashes with moulded surrounds. The projecting left wing features two large 20th-century casement windows, with three plain sashes above.

Inside, there is a cantilever dogleg winder stair with turned balusters and a ramped scrolled handrail, leading to a shaped landing. This building stands on the site of an Augustinian friary and may contain some fragments of medieval walling in its foundations.
