Description

The Lincolnshire Motor Company Showrooms, located on Lucy Tower Street and Brayford Wharf North in Lincoln, were designed in 1958 and built in 1959 by architect Sam Scorer, with engineering by Dr. K Hajnal Konyi. Originally serving as motor showrooms and a garage, the building features a reinforced concrete construction for the main garage area, while the circular corner block has a steel frame and concrete floors, with a curtain wall facing Lucy Tower Street and a flat roof.

The rear section, now a bookstore, retains its reinforced concrete hyperbolic paraboloid shell roof, which is supported by columns to create a clear, unobstructed space. This area consists of four units, each measuring 50 feet square and 2.5 inches thick, with thickened edges forming the supporting framework. The lower points of the shell are supported by reinforced concrete columns, and the high points at each corner are stabilized against wind by steel columns.

The building is organized into three main parts: the rear garage, which has seen little alteration and is now a bookstore, and the former showroom facing Lucy Tower Street, which includes a circular front showroom and office, now functioning as a branch library. The Lincolnshire Motor Company Showrooms are noted for being a good example of an elegant hyperbolic paraboloid shell concrete building, with its structure largely intact, and it has adapted well to its current use.
