Description
A shop, dwelling, and warehouse, built in the early 19th century and converted into offices around 1990. The building is constructed of brick with stone detailing, and has a slate roof which is hipped at the front and gabled at the rear. It stands on the south-west corner of Llanthony Road and Church Street.
The front, facing Llanthony Road, is two bays wide. It features a symmetrical timber shop front framed by pilasters and a fascia with brackets at each end. A doorway with a rectangular fanlight containing margin bars is centrally positioned, flanked by large shop windows with 5x3 panes of glazing bars. The upper floors each have two sashes with 3x4 panes of glazing bars, set within openings with flat-arched heads formed of five raised-and-stepped stone voussoirs and stone sills.
The east side, facing Church Street, is five bays wide. The left-hand bay has been altered in the late 20th century, with a doorway on the ground floor and windows with close-set vertical bars in the two upper floors; these formerly held loading doors. The right-hand bay is blank on the ground and first floors. On the ground and first floors, each of the three central bays contains a sash window with 3x4 panes of glazing bars. The second floor has a shorter sash window with 3x4 panes of glazing bars in each of the four bays, all set within openings with the same flat-arched stone heads and stone sills as the front elevation.
The interior was not inspected. The building is an interesting example of its type, with a well-preserved shop front, and is historically linked to the nearby docks development of the early 19th century.
