Description
38 and 40 High Pavement are two townhouses that have been converted into a café and offices. They date from the late 18th century and early 19th century and were restored and altered in the late 20th century. The buildings are finished in stucco with ashlar dressings and feature slate roofs, which include two 19th-century hipped dormers with sash windows.
The structures have a plinth and rise to three storeys plus attics, with a window arrangement of 1:3. The windows consist of 18th-century and 19th-century glazing bar sashes. No. 38, located on the right, has three 12-pane sashes on the upper floors. The doorway is off-centre and features a modern design, with a plate glass window to the right and a rendered doorcase with a gable and segmental opening to the left. No. 40, on the left, has a segment-arched 16-pane sash on the first floor and a similar flat-headed window above. The central late 20th-century entrance has a 6-panel door with an overlight, flanked by single 12-pane sashes.
