Description
Walton's Hotel is a house and attached coach house, now functioning as a hotel, built around 1828-1832. It was designed by PF Robinson or TC Hine of Nottingham for the 4th Duke of Newcastle and has been altered in the late 20th century. The building features stucco with a hipped slate roof and four coped side wall stacks. It has a plinth and moulded wooden eaves, with windows that are mainly original glazing bar sashes.
The structure is two storeys tall with a three-window range. The street front has a central doorway with a hood, which has been converted to a glazing bar window. On either side, there are two-storey bow windows with three sashes each, featuring moulded surrounds and a cornice on the ground floor. The central window on the right has been altered to a French window. The left return includes a central square porch with pilasters and an entablature, along with a renewed wooden doorcase that contains the original half-glazed door and overlight. Above the porch is a single sash window.
The rear wing to the left has three round-arched glazing bar windows, with two plain sashes above. The right return features an attached coach house that is single storey, with a three by two bay L-plan. It has a renewed wooden cupola and two original round-arched margin glazed windows.
Inside, there is a stone cantilever staircase with a cast-iron balustrade and a ramped handrail. Two ground floor rooms have shutters, plaster ceiling borders, and cornices. This building is part of an early development scheme by the 4th Duke of Newcastle for the Park Estate.
