Description

A pair of houses, now flats, built around 1845-50, along with attached railings and a wall. The houses were designed by TC Hine of Nottingham for the 4th Duke of Newcastle as part of an early scheme to develop the Park Estate. The buildings are stucco with a slate roof, topped by four coped side wall stacks. The ground floor is rusticated, and there’s a sill band to the first floor, an eaves cornice, and a blocking course at the top. Most of the windows are original sash windows with glazing bars. The buildings are three storeys plus a front basement, and have a four-window frontage with set-back side bays. The garden front, facing south, has four windows on each floor and in the basement. The first and second floors are divided by giant Ionic pilasters. The left side bay has irregularly placed windows. The right side bay features a round-cornered casement window with two lights, and above that, a segment-arched sash window, all with moulded surrounds. The right return side has Italianate-style windows: three round-cornered two-light casements with wooden mullions on the ground floor, and above them, single segment-arched sash windows, also with moulded surrounds. The rear return side has a six-panel door with an overlight, and above the door, a single window, all in a matching style. The main rear elevation has regular rows of sash windows with glazing bars, with a more recent doorway inserted to the right. An attached cast-iron area railing is on the left side, and a coped, rendered area wall is on the right.
