Description

Numbers 5 and 6 are a pair of houses, now converted into flats, along with an adjoining boundary wall. They were built around 1845-1850 by TC Hine of Nottingham for the 4th Duke of Newcastle. The buildings were altered around 1870 and in the 20th century. They are constructed of stucco with stucco dressings and feature a slate roof with two central coped stacks. The design includes a rusticated basement, a ground floor sill band, an eaves cornice, and a balustrade with pedestals.

The windows are primarily original glazing bar sashes with moulded surrounds. The houses are two storeys high, plus a two-storey front basement, and have a five-window range. The main front, facing the garden, features a canted bay window on the left, dating from around 1870, which is three storeys tall and has a coped panelled external stack flanked by plain sashes. On the right, the lower basement has a large canted bay window with five lights and a rooflight. The upper basement has an additional bay to the right and five sashes, two of which have been reglazed. The upper floors, separated by giant Ionic pilasters, contain four sashes, with two on the left having blind boxes.

The left return, facing North Road, has a first-floor sill band and a minor cornice, with irregular fenestration that mainly consists of plain sashes, including a projecting double sash on the right under a pediment. The rear of the building has two bay windows from around 1870, one single storey and one two storeys high.

The boundary wall is made of red brick with a blue brick plinth and coping, extending from the left front corner in a curve along North Road and Newcastle Drive. It is approximately 2 meters high and 40 meters long. Near the houses, there is a gateway with square piers and a coped flat gable. This building is part of an early development scheme by the 4th Duke of Newcastle for the Park Estate.
