Description

Four houses, now flats, were built around 1845 to 1850 by TC Hine of Nottingham for the 4th Duke of Newcastle as part of an early development of the Park Estate. The houses are in two linked pairs, located at numbers 7 to 10 Western Terrace. They are constructed of stucco with stucco dressings, and have gabled and hipped roofs covered in plain tiles and slate. Each pair has two rendered square stacks rising centrally.

The houses feature a rusticated basement, a sill band to the ground floor, an eaves cornice, and coped gables. The windows are mainly original sash windows with glazing bars. The houses are two storeys high plus a basement and garrets, each with four windows. Nos. 7 & 8 have a projecting central section and upper floors defined by giant pilasters. A central pediment is present, although the original balustrade to the left has been replaced with a solid parapet on the right. The ground floor of these houses has four margin light sashes with pediments above them. Above the ground floor are four sashes. The basement level has four windows. A central link, three storeys high and spanning two windows, exhibits irregular fenestration. Nos. 9 & 10 have an eaves cornice, with the upper floors divided into recessed panels by large pilasters. Their ground floor has four sashes with cornices. Above, there are four smaller sashes. The basement of these houses contains three sash windows and a French window to the left. Each pair has a pedimented gable, with further glazing bar sash windows in the garrets. The rear of the houses has hipped wings to the left and centre.
