Description

8 and 10 Park Valley are two houses built between 1844 and 1851 by PF Robinson for the fourth Duke of Newcastle. They were restored in the late 20th century. The buildings are constructed from coursed squared stone with a partly rendered first floor, featuring ashlar dressings and a renewed plain tile roof. They exhibit a Tudor style with quoins and have two external side wall stacks, one with four coped round flues that are rendered.

The houses are three storeys high and consist of three bays across the front, with irregular facades and plans. The west front features two main gables and a central gabled porch, all two storeys high, adorned with elaborate traceried bargeboards. The central entrance has a Tudor arched board door with a window above it. The right gable includes a canted bay window with three lights and a window above, while the left side bay has a truncated external stack.

On the north side, there is a recessed centre between the gabled wings, which also have bargeboards. The centre contains a three-light mullioned window, and above it is a coved jetty with a two-light window and minimal timber framing. Each wing has single two-light windows on every floor. The south side has a recessed centre with a Tudor arched door and a window above. To the left, there is a wing with a canted bay window with four lights and a rendered timber-framed gable featuring a cross casement. To the right, there is an altered square bay window, and above it, a canted bay window with five lights and a pyramidal roof.

This building is part of an early development scheme by the fourth Duke of Newcastle for the Park Estate.
