Description
Numbers 5 and 6 are a pair of houses with attached area railings, part of a row of six pairs connected by single-storey links that are now garages. They were built between 1827 and 1833, likely designed by PF Robinson and constructed by William Patterson for the fourth Duke of Newcastle. The houses are made of stucco and feature a slate roof with coped gables and four plain side wall stacks. They have a plinth, eaves cornice, and a coped parapet. The windows, mostly original glazing bar sashes, have moulded surrounds, cornices on the ground floor, and bracketed sills above. The buildings are two storeys tall, plus a basement and garrets, with a four-window range.
In the centre, there is a projecting double porch with a cornice and parapet, featuring two fielded six-panel doors flanked by pilasters. Each side of the porch has a round-arched window, with a single window beyond on each side, and four smaller windows above. The area railings and gates are made of cast iron with spearhead designs, flanking the porch. This building is part of an early development scheme by the Duke of Newcastle to enhance Castle Park.
