Description

The Memorial Nurses' Home is a nurses' residence built between 1921 and 1923 by the architectural firm Evans, Cartwright & Woollett of Nottingham. It is constructed from red brick with ashlar dressings and features hipped green slate mansard roofs. The building has six coped brick side wall stacks and is designed in a stripped Classical style.

The structure has a plinth, a main cornice, and a coped parapet that forms a balcony for the upper attics. Most windows are paired glazing bar sashes with slightly segmental rubbed brick heads, burnt brick surrounds, and keystones. The attic windows are smaller and have flat heads. The building is three storeys tall plus attics, with a total of 15 bays arranged in a pattern of 1:5:3:5:1.

The facade is symmetrical, featuring a projecting central section and end bays. A central portico spans three storeys and three bays, supported by giant Ionic columns in antis, with bronze lettering on the frieze that reads "1914 in remembrance 1918." Beneath the portico are three cross-framed French windows. Above this, there are four windows flanked by wreaths, all under a low-pitched gable adorned with a bronze crest and crossed flags. The upper attic has three additional windows.

On each side of the building, there is a single window followed by three pairs of windows on each floor and in the attics. The end bays are marked by giant pilasters, each containing a single pair of windows. At the rear, there is a central portico that is two storeys high, featuring double Ionic columns and an open pediment. The side elevations have regular fenestration, with double windows in the end bays. At the east end, there is a single-storey flat-roofed projection with a parapet that includes tile detailing.
