Description

This is a pair of boundary marks located opposite number 5 on St James' Terrace in Nottingham. They were created in 1869 and 1878 and are made of cast iron. Each mark has a semicircular section with rounded tops and raised lettering. The mark on the right, dated 1869, features the names of the Overseers of the Poor, while the one on the left, dated 1878, lists the names of the Mayor, Sheriff, and other City officials. These boundary marks represent the City's efforts to assert its jurisdiction in the Standard Hill area and to collect poor rates there.
