Description
1 and 2 Castle Grove are a pair of houses built in 1856 by TC Hine of Nottingham. They are constructed from white brick, featuring red and blue brick dressings, along with painted stucco details. The houses have hipped slate roofs topped with three coped brick chimneys. Architectural features include a plinth, a first-floor sill band, and a moulded cornice. The windows are primarily original margin light sashes with chamfered surrounds.
The buildings rise two storeys plus attics and have a three-by-four window arrangement. The north front showcases a projecting central bay with a shaped gable that contains a round-arched window. There is a central round-arched doorway flanked by sidelights, topped with a cornice and segmental pediment. Above this doorway is a single sash window. The slightly projecting side bays feature tripartite sashes on the ground floor and single sashes above.
At the right corner, there is an octagonal turret that rises two storeys and has a spire roof. Each face of the turret has round-arched sashes on the ground floor, with an arcade of reglazed round-arched windows above. The right return to the west has a slightly recessed centre with projecting sides. In the centre, there are two tripartite sashes, with single sashes above. The left bay has a single sash on each floor, while the right bay features a two-storey canted bay window with three sashes. Above this bay window is a triple-arched loggia with round arches and columns adorned with ornate capitals. The south front mirrors the north front but lacks the turret. This building is part of TC Hine's earliest phase of the Castle Park development for the Duke of Newcastle.
