Description

Nottingham Castle Middle Bailey wall and towers are part of the north wall of the middle bailey and include the remains of two towers. The wall was built between 1171 and 1172 for Henry II. The east tower, known as the Black Tower, was constructed between 1250 and 1270 for Henry III, while the west tower, called King Richard's Tower, was built between 1460 and 1485 for Richard III. The wall core is approximately 2 meters high and 25 meters long, made of random rubble. The site was excavated and consolidated between 1976 and 1978. The Black Tower, located to the east, is made of coursed rubble and is round, measuring about 10 meters across. The King Richard's Tower, to the west, was excavated and consolidated in 1978 and is built of ashlar and coursed squared rubble. It features a canted tower base with a coped enclosing wall and contains a rock-hewn well shaft. These structures are important remnants representing three phases of the medieval castle.
