Description
This is a house, built in 1856 by TC Hine of Nottingham, and altered in the late 19th century. It is constructed of white brick with red and blue brick accents, stucco, and ashlar dressings. The roof is slate, with gabled and hipped sections and two coped side wall stacks. The building has a plinth, a band at first-floor level, and rebated eaves. It is two storeys high, with a three-window front, plus a corner tower.
The south-west front features a central pointed arch doorway with a moulded surround and shafts, and double doors with glazed panels. Above the doorway is a three-light chamfered mullioned window. To the left is a two-storey canted bay window with a pyramidal roof. The stone lower floor of the bay has a central French window and overlight, flanked by casement windows. Above this, a wooden bay window with sham balustrades has a central three-light casement flanked by two-light casements. All windows feature leaded glazing. To the right is a two-storey square brick bay window with a hipped roof and a three-light cross mullioned window. Above this is a similar window without a transom, both with round-arched lights. The corner has an octagonal three-storey tower with a hipped slate roof and a round-headed window on each face on all floors. A single-storey, mid-19th century iron lean-to conservatory is present on the right return.
Inside, there is a wooden open-well staircase with a traceried balustrade. This house was part of TC Hine’s initial development of Castle Park for the Duke of Newcastle.
