Description

Numbers 15, 16, and 17 are three houses built circa 1827-1833, with alterations in the mid-19th century and mid-20th century, by PF Robinson for the fourth Duke of Newcastle. They are constructed of stucco with hipped slate roofs, and feature three large side wall stacks with multiple flues. The architectural style is Italianate, characterized by string courses, pilasters, and modillion eaves. The windows are primarily glazing bar sashes with moulded surrounds. The three-story houses, plus attics, have a four-window range. Due to the steep slope of the site, the houses are entered at first-floor level from Park Terrace.

The main facade, facing the Park, is recessed in the center and flanked by square wings, the left wing being taller with pyramidal roofs. The ground floor features French windows flanked by single glazing bar windows. The first floor has a three-bay verandah supported by cast-iron columns, covering two French windows. To the left of the verandah is a large cross casement window from the mid-20th century; to the right, a round-arched glazing bar sash with a keystone. Above, there are four sashes; the attic of the left wing has a single small sash. The rear, facing Park Terrace, is highly irregular.

To the left, a pair of wrought-iron gates with scroll tops stand on square piers rendered with pyramidal caps. To the right of these gates is a square porch with similar corner piers and a panelled door. Beyond that is a short spearhead railing and gate, followed by a round-arched ashlar gateway with a wrought-iron gate and square piers. These houses were originally part of an early development scheme by the Duke of Newcastle to expand Castle Park. Attached railings and gateways are also part of the listing.
