Description

Three houses, numbered 36, 37, and 38, RopeWalk, were built around 1827 to 1837 and subsequently altered in the mid-19th century and late 20th century. The buildings are constructed of stucco with artificial slate roofs, and feature two coped stacks to the left. The facade has a rusticated ground floor, an eaves cornice, and a blocking course. Most windows are plain sashes, with cornices to the first floor. The buildings are three storeys high plus attics, and have a four-window range. The front, facing Park Terrace, has two bay windows in the centre. The left bay window is rounded and spans three storeys, featuring a tripartite sash on each floor, with the second-floor sash being smaller and reglazed. The side bay to the left has a renewed French window with a hood, above which is a glazing bar sash with a 20th-century wrought-iron balcony, and above that, a smaller glazing bar sash. The right bay window is canted and three storeys high plus an attic, with three sashes. To the right of this bay is a mid-20th-century single-storey addition with an angled corner and a French window. Above the addition, the side bay features a 20th-century French window and overlight, and above that, a smaller sash. The rear elevation primarily has glazing bar sashes. These buildings were originally part of an early development plan by the 4th Duke of Newcastle to create the Park estate.
