Description
No. 40 Ropewalk is a house that has been converted into offices, built around 1827 to 1837, with later additions and alterations from the late 19th and 20th centuries. The building features a stucco exterior and a hipped slate roof with four coped side wall stacks. It has a plinth and modillion eaves. The windows are primarily original glazing bar sashes with moulded surrounds.
The building is three storeys high and has a three-window range. The front facing Ropewalk includes a central half-glazed door with nine panels, topped by a segmental pediment on brackets. To the left, there is a canted bay window with four glazing bar sashes and a cornice, and to the right, an original sash window. Each floor above has three sashes.
To the right, there is a single-storey mid-19th century addition with two bays and a bay window featuring a plain parapet. The front facing Park Terrace has a central glazed door with an overlight, and above it, a glazed door with a cornice and a cast-iron balcony on brackets, all dating from the 20th century. On each side of this entrance, there are two-storey canted bay windows with three margin light sashes and cornices, and again, three sashes above.
This building is part of an early development scheme by the 4th Duke of Newcastle for the Park Estate.
