Description
Two houses, numbered 32 and 32A, Ropewalk, were built around 1827 to 1837, with later alterations and additions in the mid-19th century and 20th century. The houses are constructed of stucco with concrete tile roofs, featuring coped gables and a central ridge stack. They have a rusticated ground floor, a sill band at ground floor level, an eaves cornice, and a blocking course. The windows are largely original sash windows with glazing bars, with bracketed cornices to the first floor and moulded surrounds above. The buildings are three storeys high plus a rear basement, and have a four-window front. The front is symmetrical, facing Park Terrace, with a central block flanked by side entrance bays. The central section features two bow windows, each three storeys high and containing two sashes per floor. The set-back entrance bays have shaped blocking courses. The ground floors have slightly projecting cross-framed glazed doors, with single windows above on each floor. The rear elevation, facing Ropewalk, retains much of its original fenestration. There are two rear wings, added in the mid-19th century. These are two storeys high, single bay in width, with a sill band, cornices and parapets. The left wing has a canted oriel window with four sashes, supported by shaped brackets, and a tall side wall stack with patterned double flues. The right wing was altered in the mid-20th century, and now has a tripartite sash window. The buildings were part of an early development scheme by the 4th Duke of Newcastle to develop the Park Estate.
