Description
The War Memorial Seventh Day Adventist Church is located in the churchyard of The Seventh Day Adventist Church, which is also listed at Grade II. It is prominently positioned overlooking the junction of London Road and University Road.
This tall memorial is made of Clipsham limestone and features a circular base topped by an octagonal plinth and shaft, culminating in a lantern cross. Each side of the lantern is decorated with a blind, tri-partite gothic ‘window’ that has intricate curved tracery. Above the lantern, there is carved foliate decoration, and at its base are carved faces, believed to represent four Apostles. The tapering octagonal shaft is adorned on each side with regularly spaced carvings, including floral designs and faces that may depict more Apostles.
The main dedicatory inscription on the front of the plinth reads "IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF OUR MEN WHO DIED IN THE GREAT WAR, 1919-1914." Another face of the memorial states, "THEIR NAMES ARE RECORDED WITHIN THE CHURCH." It is noted that there was once an inscription that read "WHO SHALL SEPARATE US FROM THE LOVE OF CHRIST," but this is no longer legible.
The memorial is situated approximately 65 meters from New Walk, a registered historic landscape.
